Live Operations Systems Engineer

DemonWare, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Activision Inc., are specialists in creating client- and server-side networking software for video games. We have worked with games studios to create compelling online multiplayer experiences in 60+ games for console and PC. DemonWare is a technology driven company, with core focuses on C++, Python, Erlang, MySQL and Linux.

The successful candidate will join our Live Operations team, who deploy and manage our extensive server infrastructure, on which we host lobby services for many of today's most popular video games (incl. many AAA titles). We are looking for people who not only have the skills required to monitor and maintain this server infrastructure, but who will take an active interest in improving it. In particular, we are looking for system administrators who believe in security and automation, and who are methodical, detail-orientated and thorough.

The ideal candidate:

  • has administration experience of Linux servers (Apache, Postfix, MySQL, Samba, etc.). Ubuntu experience preferred
  • is comfortable with Windows-based PC administration. Windows Server administration a plus
  • has in-depth knowledge of IP based networking
  • is an experienced SQL database administrator (MySQL preferred)
  • insists on automating common tasks. Is adept at Unix shell programming and ideally Python
  • has web development experience

  • is a quick learner

  • has strong analytical / troubleshooting skills

  • works well under pressure

  • web service development experience (e.g., XML-RPC, REST) a plus

MySQL DBA

DemonWare, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Activision Inc., are specialists in creating client- and server-side networking software for video games. We have worked with games studios to create compelling online multiplayer experiences in more than 40 games for Xbox, Playstation and PC. DemonWare is a technology driven company, with core focuses on C++, Python, Erlang, MySQL and Linux.

We have an open position for an experienced MySQL DBA who will join our Live Operations team. The MySQL DBA will work closely with our Systems Engineers to manage, maintain and scale our production MySQL environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for database systems which power the online experience some of the biggest and best games in the world.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Design, Document and Monitor MySQL database systems in Production, Staging and Development environments

  • Develop Processes and Procedures for maintenance and modification of database systems

  • Working closely with Systems Engineers on capacity planning and performance improvement

  • Working closely with Developers to provide guidance on database system design

  • Develop back-up and recovery procedures, including testing back-ups and data integrity

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Has a Bachelors in Computer Science (or similar) or comparable experience

  • Has 4+ years of Database Administration with MySQL on a Linux Platform

  • Has experience managing very large database installations, ideally MySQL

  • Has proven experience with database replication, automation and monitoring

  • Has hands-on experience scaling systems under pressure

  • Has strong scripting skills ideally in at least one of Python, Bash or Perl

  • Is comfortable working with Linux

Title Support Software Developer

We have worked with games studios to create compelling online multiplayer experiences in more than 40 games for Xbox, Playstation and PC. DemonWare is a technology driven company, with core focuses on C++, Python, Erlang, MySQL and Linux.

We have an open position for a software developer to design and implement custom online features for some of the top games in the world. The successful candidate will work closely with game studios around the world. They will be passionate about software, video games and online technologies. Game development involves tight deadlines and the ideal developer will enjoy working on challenging projects under pressure.


The Ideal Candidate:

  • Has a B.Sc. in Computer Science (or similar)

  • Has excellent C++ skills

  • Has 2+ years experience as a software developer

  • Has excellent debugging and analytical skills

  • Has a deep understanding of networking technologies, e.g. TCP, UDP, security and scalability

  • Has experience designing client/server and peer-to-peer applications

  • Can identify complex problems and find simple solutions

  • Is able to clearly communicate technical concepts in plain English

  • Enjoys working as part of a team in a high-pressure environment

  • Is willing to spend some time working at game studios around the world


Of advantage are:

  • A passion for video games

  • Exposure to Linux/Unix

  • Experience with SQL and database design

  • Experience with a range of development environments, e.g. MS Visual Studio, Unix/gcc

  • Knowledge of Python
